In a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s small business ecosystem, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has officially licensed 56 Business Development Service Providers (BDSPs) to assist Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.

For many Nigerian entrepreneurs, navigating the world of funding, formal registration, and structured growth has been a long and lonely road. With this new initiative, SMEDAN hopes to bridge the gap between entrepreneurs and the professional guidance they desperately need to survive and scale.

What Are BDSPs and Why Should You Care?
Business Development Service Providers are like personal trainers for your business. They help you prepare solid business plans, offer financial advice, connect you to investors, and get you ready to access loans or grants. Essentially, they help you run your business like a pro—even if you’re just starting with a small shop or an idea.

According to SMEDAN’s Director-General, Charles Odii, these BDSPs have been carefully vetted and trained to provide MSMEs with credible, hands-on support. The idea is not just to have consultants on paper, but real partners who understand the challenges of doing business in Nigeria and are ready to walk entrepreneurs through them.

Why This Matters to You as an Entrepreneur
One of the biggest challenges facing MSMEs in Nigeria is access—not just to finance, but also to the kind of technical and strategic support that makes investors take you seriously. Many business owners miss out on funding opportunities simply because they don’t have a proper business plan, lack financial records, or don’t know how to present themselves professionally.

SMEDAN’s move to license BDSPs changes that. Now, entrepreneurs across Nigeria can access trustworthy, qualified experts who will help them tidy up their operations and get them investor-ready. It’s especially important now, given the economic uncertainties and the growing need for businesses to stay resilient and adaptable.

The introduction of BDSPs also supports the federal government’s push to improve ease of doing business in the country and formalize more small businesses.

For Smartpreneurs looking to take their ventures to the next level, SMEDAN’s new initiative could be the spark needed to unlock bigger growth opportunities. The road to scaling just got a little easier—and a lot more guided.
