Nigeria’s crude oil production exceeded 1.8 million barrels per day (BPD) in July, with the current average production at 1.78 million BPD.

Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission CEO Gbenga Komolafe shared this information with attendees at an energy conference on Monday, according to Reuters.

The NUPRC head explained that enhanced security operations enabled this production increase, which supports efforts to raise oil output by 1 million BPD to reach 3 million BPD total.

Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer, depends on crude for almost two-thirds of government income and more than 80% of foreign exchange earnings, making higher production essential for economic stability.

However, extensive oil theft, regional conflicts, and prolonged underinvestment had previously reduced output and pressured government finances before Nigeria intensified enforcement efforts in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Komolafe stated the commission will continue collaborating with industry partners to maintain production increases and enhance sector transparency.

Key Details

OPEC reported Nigeria’s average daily crude production reached 1.505 million BPD in June 2025.

  • The oil organisation obtained these figures directly from Nigerian officials.
  • This output represents a 3.58% increase from May’s 1.453 million BPD and the highest level since January.
  • Nigeria achieved OPEC‘s 2025 production target of 1.5 million BPD for the second time.
  • Secondary source data estimated Nigeria’s June crude production at 1.547 million BPD, a 1.24% rise from May’s 1.528 million BPD.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) reported gas production increased modestly in June 2025 to 7.581 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCF/D), up from May’s 7.352 billion BSCF/D.

Crude oil and condensate sales fell to 21.68 million barrels in June from 24.77 million barrels in May.

Despite lower crude sales, the downstream sector showed significant improvement. Fuel availability at NNPC Retail stations jumped to 71% in June from 62% in May.

NNPCL reported total June 2025 revenue of N4.571 trillion, continuing its positive earnings trend, as crude oil and gas production both increased substantially.

The company also announced N905 billion in after-tax profit for the period.
