Hey Smartpreneurs! We caught up with Simon, a trader in one of the markets in Igbo Efon, Lagos state and he gave some useful entrepreneurial advice.

The principles of business are the same whether in a big or small venture, be it in an organised corporate setup or kiosk

Here are 3 business lessons from Simon:

1. Acquire the knowledge and skills needed in your type of business. If there’s no shame in making profit or being successful, there should be no shame in learning. If you have to be an apprentice, read books, attend webinars, take online courses,  to know the nitty-gritty of your line of business then go for it without hesitation. The truth is that a lot of businesses don’t survive after five years, studies and research are carried out frequently to find out the root of this. Some experts or consultants have done the work and are ready to share their findings to prospective startups, in most cases, at a fee to avoid recurring mistakes.

2. They say customer is always right -practically speaking, not all the time. You have to communicate in a way not to escalate a situation but to make your client feel you understand their point. Treat your customers right. Learn how to have a good relationship with your customers in person or online space. People sometimes purchase products simply because of great customer service, not because they need that product.
