The COVID-19 pandemic is shattering a lot of things, changing the lives of people, businesses and organisation. It is also causing an unprecedented global health emergency and a global economic shakeup. The impact can be seen on small and medium-sized enterprises in Nigeria as the government’s restriction order take a toll on businesses. Nigeria’s wobbling economy will definitely witness setback and SMEs which contribute 48% of national GDP, account for 96% of businesses and 84% of employment, will not be left out.

But this is not the time to lament, this is the ideal time for entrepreneurs to strategize, create content, and expand your social media reach and stay in touch with customers.

So many people are on social media and business owners should be proactive with offering quality content. It is imperative business owners embrace the instantaneous nature of social networking, keep stakeholders and customers informed. In these unique times, social media can provide solutions to some hurdles

Here are few ways you can use social networking to leverage your business this period:

1. Reach out to customers to see how they are doing – start conversations and build connections. Be honest and transparent without creating fear – your posts should show empathy and compassion, rather than stress or fear. Look for opportunities to help people – use it to reach out to those in need and see if you can help.

2. People will be looking for fun and entertaining content for distraction, so consider TikTok videos, Facebook or Instagram Live. You can either broadcast live from your main channels or add privacy controls – such as the creation of private Facebook groups – meaning you can charge people for the right to watch your live stream. If live video is not something you’ve tried before, now is the time! You can also use live video to remind them about your products and services. Some may queue for your service once the restriction is lifted. Host an online event – AMA (Ask Me Anything) related to your industry or have another team member jump on Instagram Live with you to discuss your latest blog post and provide additional insights.

3. Put a post on a company blog or share through email and other social channels. Tell them your latest product and what they should be expecting from you. You can also inform them about yourself, the company and your staff.
