Airtel Kenya has embarked on an expansive journey to enhance its 5G network infrastructure, marking a pivotal advancement in the country’s digital landscape. Currently spanning 39 counties and 285 wards nationwide, Airtel has established over 690 operational 5G sites, catering to the burgeoning demand for high-speed connectivity among Kenyan consumers.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic response from the market, Airtel Kenya aims to bolster its network with an additional 1,000 5G sites by year-end, pushing the total to an impressive 1,690 sites. This ambitious expansion underscores the telecom giant’s steadfast commitment to fostering digital inclusivity across Kenya.

The surge in 5G adoption is underscored by recent data from the Communications Authority of Kenya, revealing a notable uptick in users. From June to September 2023 alone, the number of 5G subscribers surged to 509,737, reflecting a robust 13.3% increase within a quarter, with an additional 59,943 users joining the network.
Ashish Malhotra, Managing Director of Airtel Kenya, articulated the company’s vision behind this rapid network expansion, stating, “We are confident that our ongoing efforts will extend connectivity to more communities nationwide, ensuring everyone benefits from the digital revolution.”
Airtel Kenya launched its 5G service in July 2023 with over 370 operational sites initially.

The company highlighted 5G’s transformative potential across various sectors, including smart cities, education, healthcare, agritech, transportation, and entertainment, demonstrating its role as a catalyst for socio-economic development.
In a strategic move to bolster its network coverage, Airtel Kenya announced plans in August 2023 to invest over $150 million (KSh21.5 billion) over three years. This commitment underscores its dedication to expanding infrastructure and improving service delivery nationwide. Additionally, the telco unveiled intentions in November 2023 to add 100 more 5G sites, further solidifying its position as a frontrunner in Kenya’s telecom sector.

Kenya has witnessed rapid adoption of 5G technology in recent years, with Safaricom launching the nation’s first 5G service in October 2022 and expanding it to 35 counties by November 2023. Equitel, Africa’s first mobile virtual network operator, joined forces with Airtel in February 2024 to introduce 5G services, further enriching the telecom landscape.

As of early 2024, Kenya boasts 22.71 million internet users, with a penetration rate of 40.8%, reflecting the country’s growing connectivity. The telecom market continues to expand, driven by population growth, improved communication services, and increased smartphone accessibility.
Airtel Kenya’s nationwide 5G rollout signifies its unwavering dedication to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to cutting-edge connectivity technologies for all Kenyans. As the journey towards comprehensive digital inclusion accelerates, Airtel remains at the forefront, empowering communities and driving socio-economic progress through advanced telecommunications solutions.
