Nokia and Telecom Egypt have unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration set to revolutionize Egypt’s telecommunications landscape with the introduction of fifth-generation (5G) technology. This alliance, announced in a press release on Monday, July 15, 2024, marks a pivotal moment as Egypt prepares to embrace the next era of connectivity.
Under this partnership, Nokia will deploy its advanced 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment across key Egyptian cities including Alexandria, Aswan, Cairo, Giza, and Luxor. The deployment, scheduled for later in 2024, will leverage Nokia’s AirScale portfolio, featuring state-of-the-art Massive MIMO radios, baseband units, remote radio heads, and associated services. Notably, Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology will power these deployments, promising enhanced capacity and coverage for Telecom Egypt’s customers.
According to Nokia, the introduction of 5G technology is poised to deliver substantial benefits to Egypt, enhancing Internet connectivity, network performance, and capacity in densely populated urban areas. This advancement is expected to catalyze innovation across various industries, empowering organizations to thrive in today’s dynamic digital economy.
Mohamed Al Fowey, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Telecom Egypt, emphasized the significance of the partnership with Nokia, affirming the telco’s commitment to delivering superior digital services. “Our collaboration with Nokia underscores our dedication to providing exceptional mobile broadband experiences and pioneering new applications enabled by the speed and low latency of 5G technology,” stated Al Fowey.
Earlier in 2024, Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) granted Telecom Egypt a historic 15-year license worth $150 million to operate 5G, positioning the telco as the country’s first licensed operator. This milestone underscores Egypt’s strategic initiative to advance its digital infrastructure and enhance connectivity capabilities.
Prior to securing the 5G license, Telecom Egypt announced a strategic partnership with Zain Omantel International Company (ZOI) to bolster digital infrastructure development. This collaboration aims to establish a robust data transfer route linking Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Arabian Gulf, further reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional telecommunications hub.
With over five decades of experience in retail telecommunications services, Telecom Egypt reported a notable 48% increase in net profits for the first nine months of 2023, underscoring its strong financial performance and strategic growth trajectory.
As Nokia and Telecom Egypt prepare to roll out 5G technology, anticipation is high for the transformative impact it will bring to Egypt’s digital landscape, paving the way for unprecedented connectivity, innovation, and economic growth in the years ahead.
