The European Commission has unveiled the EU Sanctions Helpdesk, a new initiative aimed at assisting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in navigating the complexities of over 40 global sanctions regimes. This free service is designed to help businesses understand and comply with international trade restrictions, thereby preventing the loss of legitimate opportunities due to legal uncertainties.
The helpdesk features a dedicated website offering a wealth of resources, including sanctions-related information, country-specific guidance, and educational materials. While larger corporations may have access to extensive compliance resources, SMEs often face challenges in this area. This initiative seeks to bridge that gap by providing tailored support to smaller businesses.

Maria Luís Albuquerque, the EU Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union, emphasized the significance of this initiative. She noted that sanctions are pivotal in addressing global conflicts and crises but acknowledged that their increasing prevalence has complicated business operations for SMEs. Albuquerque stated, “Through its resources, events, and compliance support services, this one-stop shop will help SMEs understand how to comply with sanctions.”
The helpdesk will collaborate with public authorities, business support organizations, financial institutions, and international compliance entities to offer comprehensive guidance. By doing so, it aims to ensure that European businesses can adapt to the evolving global regulatory landscape while remaining compliant with international trade laws.
