On August 8, 2025, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) revealed that a recent failure in processing Stamp Duties payments stemmed from incompatibilities between its newly upgraded portal and the systems used by partner agencies. Consequently, some users encountered payment errors, and because of this, the CAC promised a quick and permanent fix.
Moreover, the Commission explained that after launching the upgraded portal, they discovered that it outpaces the technical infrastructure of collaborating agencies. Engineers from both sides are now working closely to resolve this misalignment.
We understand that paying Stamp Duties through the CAC portal has been difficult lately. However, the CAC reassured users via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle that a durable solution is almost ready. Additionally, they announced an upcoming, AI-powered, simplified filing system for Business Names, starting with an enhanced Annual Returns feature that should go live over the weekend. This step underscores their commitment to smoother, digital-first service delivery.

As for context, Stamp Duty is an indirect tax governed by the Stamp Duties Act, and it must be paid to make documents legally admissible. In Nigeria, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) handles the collection of these duties. Meanwhile, in March 2024, the federal government began directing banks to deduct 0.375% as Stamp Duty on all loan disbursements. In total, between 2016 and 2022, authorities collected roughly ₦370.686 billion in Stamp Duty revenue.
In summary, while the CAC’s portal upgrade improved system functionality, it exposed compatibility gaps with partner systems. As a result, users experienced Stamp Duties payment disruptions. However, thanks to collaborative technical efforts and forthcoming AI enhancements, the Commission looks set to restore and even enhance service efficiency soon.
