In a strategic move to bolster entrepreneurship within Nigeria’s mining sector, the Federal Government has announced plans to establish additional gemstone and jewelry-making centres nationwide. This initiative aims to enhance local value addition and support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) operating in the industry.
During a recent tour of the Laurel School of Mining in Abuja, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, commended the institution for its exemplary training programs in jewelry and gemstone production. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of jewelry produced, noting their competitiveness on the international market.
“From our raw materials such as gold, sapphire, gemstones, and the likes, we are now seeing finished products—jewelry—being created at this centre. That is value addition,” Dr. Alake stated. He emphasized that this development significantly contributes to the mining industry by providing employment opportunities for youth, driving industrialization, and generating additional revenue for the country.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing production at existing centres and establishing new ones across the country with the commencement of the 2025 budget implementation. He highlighted the importance of scaling up jewelry production to meet local demand and for export purposes, identifying the sector as a potential major foreign exchange earner for Nigeria.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on crude oil by harnessing the nation’s abundant solid mineral resources. By focusing on value addition through training and infrastructure development, the government aims to empower MSMEs, fostering economic growth and sustainable development within the mining sector.
The establishment of these jewelry-making centres is expected to have a profound impact on Nigerian businesses. By providing MSMEs with the necessary skills and facilities to process raw gemstones into finished products, the initiative will enable local businesses to move up the value chain, resulting in increased profitability and competitiveness. Furthermore, the emphasis on training and capacity building will equip entrepreneurs with the expertise needed to create high-quality products that can compete in both local and international markets. This, in turn, will stimulate job creation, promote entrepreneurship, and contribute to the overall economic development of the country.
