Kenya has sealed a monumental deal, securing a whopping $1 billion investment from tech giants Microsoft and UAE-based AI firm, G42, for the development of a cutting-edge geothermal data center. The initiative, a collaborative effort with Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy, marks a significant stride towards digital transformation in the region.
In a joint announcement, Microsoft and G42 revealed their ambitious plans to funnel the initial investment into various projects aimed at bolstering Kenya’s digital infrastructure. The official signing ceremony is slated for Friday, May 24, 2024, solidifying the commitment of all parties involved.
This landmark agreement coincides with President William Ruto’s historic state visit to the United States, a noteworthy event highlighted by Microsoft as the first visit by a sitting African head of state in nearly two decades.
At the heart of the initiative lies the establishment of a state-of-the-art data center campus, powered by renewable geothermal energy and equipped with cutting-edge water conservation technology. Microsoft affirmed that the data center would not only operate on but also provide access to its Azure platform through a newly minted East Africa Cloud Region, expected to be operational within 24 months post the definitive agreements.
But the vision doesn’t stop there. Beyond the data center, the partnership outlines an array of projects geared towards fostering innovation and digital literacy in the region. This includes the development of AI models in both Swahili and English, along with the rollout of AI-driven societal services.
In a bid to cultivate local talent and expertise, G42 has already commenced training an open-source language AI model in Swahili and English, utilizing its robust data infrastructure based in the United States. Furthermore, the partners envision the establishment of an East African Innovation Lab in Nairobi, dedicated to empowering businesses and organizations in leveraging cloud and AI services to drive growth and innovation.
As part of their commitment to capacity building, Microsoft and G42 will offer a comprehensive suite of digital and AI skills training programs, including a cybersecurity training initiative poised to equip over 2,000 individuals annually with the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape securely.
With this monumental investment and strategic collaboration, Kenya is poised to emerge as a regional powerhouse in the digital arena, propelling economic growth and innovation while unlocking new opportunities for its citizens.
