In the quest to understand Artificial Intelligence (AI), perhaps a childlike perspective holds the key. Many evaluations suggest AI models reason at a level comparable to a two-year-old. But what exactly does that imply?
Recently, I came across a video featuring James, Peter, and Peter from Google discussing cutting-edge solutions and practical applications of AI. One of their key points resonated deeply: AI exhibits a distinct “youthfulness” in several ways.
There’s more to this limitation than meets the eye. AI’s learning process mirrors that of a young child. The panel explained how children learn to identify objects, like zebras, after being shown a series of training images, similar to how AI operates.

However, the discussion ventured into intriguing technologies that, in a sense, “infantilize” AI. One concept involves building a network upon collaborative “baby AI” models. I’ve witnessed engineers adopting this approach, piecing together multiple systems to achieve a robust outcome. This aligns with Marvin Minsky’s insightful proposition: the brain isn’t a single large computer, but rather a network of hundreds working together!
The Google team also presented a concept for a sentence simplification engine, designed to break down complex narratives into their core components. “Identify the problem you want to address, and simply get started,” they advised aspiring innovators.
The discussion further explored domain knowledge and adaptation – crafting systems focused on specific tasks through techniques like supervised fine-tuning. I particularly enjoyed the analogy where one speaker likened fine-tuning to “method acting for LLMs” – a fitting comparison! They discussed customizing an LLM to embody a particular personality, a humanization process akin to “agentizing” AI, where the system impersonates a specific figure (the Google group used Sherlock Holmes as an example).
The conversation then delved into extending AI for intricate workflows. One speaker mentioned asynchronous day trading and the model’s inherent bias – classifying tasks as bullish or bearish based on identification. Every tweet, he revealed, was categorized as bearish for some reason. Perhaps this stemmed from the program’s trained perception of the platform itself – a fascinating thought!
Despite this bias, the speaker expressed surprise at the model’s out-of-the-box capabilities.
The panel addressed precision and accuracy, specifically how to prevent hallucinations. One solution involves integrating a language model with a database, allowing each technology to excel in its domain – AI excels at assisting users in finding answers, while databases provide factual information.
They also covered optimization problems, the challenges of training on sensitive data, and data privacy considerations, regardless of whether you use your own model or someone else’s.
The video offers a wealth of knowledge, and the concept of simplifying AI holds immense potential. The sentence simplification engine, for instance, caters to a universal desire – wouldn’t we all love to simplify complex reading material at times? AI might be the perfect tool for this very purpose!
