Many fail before they give success a chance because of fear.

Fear can be a major problem, preventing people from achieving what they desire and are capable of. There is so much to gain once you are able to overcome your fear.

Here are 4 effective ways to deal with fear.

1. Fear as a tool. Once you understand fear, then you might be able to use it to your own advantage. Sometimes fear is born out of a terrible experience or popular opinion about something. This knowledge shouldn’t make you feel small, instead use it as a tool to make better decisions. Embrace fear and let it inform your actions, but not control you and stop you from progressing.

2. What exactly is your fear? Understand your fear and where it stems from. Let it stay in your mind or you can write it down boldly.

When you know your fear, you will know how to intentionally work on it. Stating your fear will help you manage it better. Face your fears today. This is crucial for self-understanding and emotional intelligence.

3.  Engaging with the fear. Once you have labelled your fear, you must engage with it.

This is where the ultimate power lies to help you overcome fears. If you are scared of interacting with people, then attend more networking events. If you have the fear of addressing people, presentations or public speaking, then engage in these activities more. You might not overcome your fears right away but being exposed to them will reduce the effect they have on you which will eventually help you overcome them.

Running from fears never improves the way you feel about them.

4. Prepare and practise more. Preparation is a factor that helps boost confidence. If you don’t know how to introduce yourself at an event or how to nail a presentation, a pitch, etc, then practise.

Rehearse in front of your friends and family or a mirror. If your fear is related to your performance in a certain activity then prepare, practice, and role play.

If you need a mentor or support group then find one to help you. You can meet with an expert to help you in a particular area you feel you need assistance in.
