Makeup is in theĀ  thriving industry of beauty and cosmetics and the need for skilled makeup artists is on the rise as more beauty products emerge.

The good thing about starting a makeup business is that it doesn’t necessarily require a huge amount of capital,

The basic products to begin with are majorly two or three different shades of Foundation, Concealer, Lip gloss, Lip stick, Eye pencil, Eye shadow, Mascara. Other items to help deliver the best makeup services are good portable light, cleaning materials and of course a mirror. These essentials should be invested in whether setting up a home studio or building a traveling studio kit to work anywhere. Therefore, to start a small scale makeup business in Nigeria would cost about ₦50,000 or less (excluding portable light, etc)

To kick off a successful journey as an MUA, you have to identify and understand your niche or target market. If your artistry is centered on bridal looks, you could meet up with wedding planners and other bridal vendors and have an agreement with them. A profitable partnership could develop from there.

Also learn and take classes from successful MUAs in your niche.

You would have to set goals. These are the things you wish to achieve with your makeup business at a particular period of time. Setting goals would guide you in every decision that you make in your journey. Your goal could be to set up a standard studio in the heart of town, to gain a certain number of returning clients, etc.

Next, you would want to draft a plan on how to execute your goals or to become the best makeup artist in your chosen niche.

Registering your business should be part of your plan as well. Register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to avoid legal issues. Registration will give you legal rights to your brand name.

Another step is to promote your business. Go out more and network. Attend industry organised events and conferences. Collaborate with photographers, movie producers, hairstylists, and other MUAs.

Bear in mind that social media is an integral part of your success story. Broaden your online presence, learn to use social media features to create lovely contents around what you do.

Good luck!
