In a powerful show of resilience and ambition, more than 1,000 entrepreneurs attended the 8th Caladium Lagos SME Bootcamp, held in Lagos (with hundreds joining virtually), as small business owners grapple with intensifying economic pressures.
The annual bootcam organized by Caladium Consulting through its Caladium SME Community offered critical capacity building, mentorship, and strategic insights to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) navigate an increasingly challenging business landscape.
Key Challenges Addressed: Legal Protection, Funding, and Brand Visibility
At the heart of the bootcamp was a recognition of the real and growing obstacles facing Nigerian SMEs: intellectual property risks, limited access to capital, and difficulties standing out in crowded digital markets.
During the opening session, legal experts including Oyinkansola “Foza” Fawehinmi, Isah Yusuf Aruwa, and Todimu Ige urged founders to safeguard their business assets through proper documentation and registration. Fawehinmi, Lead Legal Consultant at Zaeda Oracle, stressed that many business owners inadvertently leave their intellectual property unprotected risking loss of brand identity and future revenue.
Building Trust Through Authentic Storytelling
In a second plenary, Edward Israel-Ayide of Carpe Diem Solutions, along with Adebayo Adegun, Mobolaji Ajayi, and Suraj Oyewale, challenged SMEs to tap into their most powerful marketing resource: their own stories.
“Your customer transformations, your founding moment, your team’s daily wins … these are your marketing assets,” Israel-Ayide said. “In a digital space full of noise, authenticity cuts through.”
He reminded participants that in a world saturated with product specs and pricing tiers, it’s how you make your customer feel that truly resonates.
Insights from Founders: Learning from the Best
A highlight of the event was the Founder’s Spotlight, featuring Razaq Ahmed, Co-Founder and CEO of Cowrywise, one of Nigeria’s leading fintech platforms. Ahmed shared his journey — from navigating tough regulatory terrain, to achieving product-market fit, to democratizing access to savings and investments. He emphasized a clear vision and customer-centric innovation as key pillars of success.
Leadership & Business Model Evolution
The third plenary focused on how SMEs can evolve their business models and leadership approach in uncertain times. Thought leaders like Godwin Tom (Sony Music Publishing Nigeria) and Ashley Immanuel (Co-Founder & COO, Semicolon) encouraged entrepreneurs to build for sustainability and scalability, while staying agile amid market volatility.

Practical Opportunities: Pitch Competition & Exhibition
More than theory, the bootcamp offered real-world opportunities:
- An exhibition marketplace featuring over 75 small businesses.
- A pitch competition where three entrepreneurs won grants to grow their ventures.
These segments provided not just exposure, but also direct access to funding and potential partners.
Why the Bootcamp Matters for Nigerian SMEs
SMEs are the backbone of Nigeria’s economy: they account for roughly 48% of GDP and provide 84% of jobs, according to the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).
Yet many of these businesses struggle with legal protections, limited funding, and building a strong brand issues the bootcamp directly tackled. The event reflects Caladium’s mission to equip entrepreneurs with the tools, mindset, and networks they need to survive and thrive.
A Vision Realized: Eight Years of Impact
The 8th edition of the Lagos SME Bootcamp is a testament to Caladium’s long-term commitment. Co-Founder and Convener Ayo Bankole-Akintujoye reflected on how, eight years ago, he and Oluwaseun Durojaiye started the initiative with a simple belief: “small businesses deserve access to the same quality of insights and networks that larger corporations enjoy.”
Since its inception in 2018, the Caladium SME Community has reached more than 10,000 small businesses, helping founders build stronger, more resilient ventures.
